The evocation of a time which is seen as contradictory and embattled, but has also come to be identified with youth, freedom, and positive change is uninterrupted: the main reason for this, and for its becoming the pivotal decade of the past century and one of the dominant myths of the modern era, seems to be that, even though it may have been or appear utopian, over-optimistic, and even naïve and confused, that time has offered freedom and hope to those who lived it and also to those who have only heard about it. To such freedom and hope this book is dedicated.
