Conceptual Metaphors and Gender A Study of Fantasy Books and Their Japanese Animations

The present paper aims at analyzing genderedconceptual metaphors in selected fantasyliterature and their Japanese animations. Forthe cognitive analysis, three books were chosen,namely:“Howl’s Moving Castle”(1986),“Earwig andthe Witch”(2011) by Diana Wynne Jones and“TheLittle Broomstick”(1971) by Mary Stewart. Theanimated adaptations were produced by StudioGhibli –“Howl’s Moving Castle”(2004),“Earwigand the Witch”(2020), and by Studio Ponoc –“Mary and the Witch’s Flower”(2017).The paper is based on the quantitative andqualitative methods of analysis of genderedconceptual metaphors, found in classical fairytales and discusses their emergence in thenovels against the influence of cultural andsocial background.The second part of the article presents theirtransposition into another medium, discussesdifferences in metaphors and proposesexplanations behind certain cultural andgender-specific motifs.
